Useful links for local history

For the wonderful West Sussex RECORDS OFFICE (Chichester) :-

  https://www.wsro.org.uk/
Sadly the Records Office website has undergone a major change.  The nice link we gave before to search the Catalogue directly no longer works – sorry !

Each page now has a ‘Search’ box at the top which produces similar results to the old.

For KEITH HART’s amazing collection of personal memories of Westbourne, go to :-

For a rare sight of the ARMY CAMP that was, in Cemetery Lane, being used as a holiday base for London children after the Army had left :-

WESTBOURNE CHURCH has it’s own detailed history webpage.  See:-

For something new – an initiative to provide accessible information on a TRAIL of sites of interest in all the villages of the area, see
https://bournetrail.co.uk/westbourne/

FACEBOOK fans can head here to share images and memories Of Old Westbourne, Southbourne, Prinsted ,and Thorney Island,
https://www.facebook.com/groups/843760849067465/
(but please give the History Group a copy of interesting photos)

MAPS and LIDAR  To see ‘out of copyright’ OS maps et al – go to the National Library of Scotland (yes Scotland) site.

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/find/marker/#zoom=5&lat=56.0000&lon=-4.0000&f=1&z=1&marker=56.0,-4.0&from=1450&to=1972

The 1890s 25” series are particularly wonderful. Here is a link to one showing Westbourne.

Unfortunately the area often falls near the boundary of two maps.   https://maps.nls.uk/view/105988681

It is not the easiest site to use but LIDAR images can be viewed as well.

For a very simple way of accessing LIDAR images – try https://houseprices.io/lab/lidar/map . This in an enhanced DSM presentation and does not cover all areas, but is so easy to use rather than the original EA tiles. Have a fun play with the 3D image. And you can have a nose at the sale prices of house around you !

Visit our most local MUSEUM for great Oyster information and lots more, including some Westbourne material.   Copies of many of our publications may be purchased here.
